When April Feavel first came to Harmony Café, it was for
community service hours for school credit because she was credit
deficient. April was
suffering from depression and rarely left her house.
She came to Harmony Café, hoping to fulfill her needed
hours for school.
April started out as a
volunteer worker at the café in September 2006.
A month later, she became involved in Harmony Corps, a
vocational training and support program.
The program teaches employment skills, which participants
practice through one-on-one meetings with Harmony Café team
members and through supervised work experience at Harmony Café.
April also completed tutoring sessions for English and
history through the café.
Because April was at risk for not graduating, she was
transferred to the alternative school, Central.
April received help for her
depression and attention-deficit disorder from a group called
the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Fox
Valley
that met weekly at Harmony Café.
She attended school and classes regularly.
Being part of Harmony Café helped her stay clean from
drugs and alcohol.
She also volunteered at the Fox
Cities
Rotary
Multicultural
Center to gain experience
as a receptionist.
April built a resume with
Harmony Café and submitted it to multiple employers, along with
a good work reference.
Currently, she is working at a local restaurant and has
gained enough confidence to live on her own.
I am proud to say that April
has also earned her high school diploma.
Congratulations!
