The
Mohican North Star
Casino became the lead sponsor of the 4th Annual Fox Cities Flag Day
Pow-Wow earlier this month with the commitment of $10,000 cash and in-kind
services. Becky Edler and Lisa Hurst of the American Indian Center of the
Fox Valley received a check for $8,000 from the Casino’s general manager
Jack Barrett. The remainder of the support will be in the form of marketing,
printing, and promotional services.
The Pow-Wow, to be held Saturday, June 10 from 4-10 p.m. at Roosevelt Middle
School in Appleton, will once again feature drum, dance and veterans groups
from across northern Wisconsin. It is intended to help American Indians
demonstrate, celebrate and preserve their traditions, for both their own
tribes and for the general public.
“We are pleased to lend the Casino’s financial support to this celebration
and in appreciation for the work of the American Indian Center of the Fox
Valley’s service to off-reservation Natives in the area,” said Barrett. The
Center, located at 128 N. Oneida St, Appleton, within the Fox Cities Rotary
Multicultural Center, has a two-fold mission. It is a gathering place for
Native Americans – offering information, referral, education, advocacy and
cultural enrichment activities – and an educational resource for the
community about Native American history, culture and values. The American
Indian Center is a program of Goodwill Industries of North Central
Wisconsin.
