On Tuesday, December 20, 2005, Governor Doyle signed Assembly Bill 498, adding all Goodwill Industries organizations in Wisconsin to the list of organizations whose property is exempt from property taxes, clarifying their status as a benevolent organization, and extending the same tax-exempt status to Goodwill Industries that other organizations such as Boy Scouts of America, Boys' Clubs of America, and Girl Scouts already enjoy. "Goodwill Industries provides an important service to people across Wisconsin-especially to low income families, people with disabilities, and those that are just looking for a leg up,” Governor Doyle said. “Last year alone, Goodwill operations in Wisconsin helped nearly 44,000 individuals. This bill will clarify the organization’s status as a benevolent organization, and help them remain focused on their core mission of helping Wisconsin’s most vulnerable citizens.” The legislation was authored by Wisconsin State Representative Steve Wieckert, passed by the Wisconsin State Assembly in June and the Wisconsin State Senate in December. In addition to Representative Wieckert, sponsors of AB 498 included: Senator Roger Breske Additionally, Governor Doyle signed Assembly Bill 501, which changes the way corrections are made to marriage certificates, providing the means for incorrect information on a marriage certificate to be completely replaced. Those in attendance were joined by Green Bay Packer Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, known to fans as KGB, who has been an advocate for AB 501. Mr. Gbaja-Biamila’s marriage certificate lists the wrong person as his father. This new law allows for incorrect parentage information to be removed completely from marriage certificates and replaced with the correct information.
