DIY embroidery to personalize thrifted clothes

Embroidery is an easy and beautiful way to personalize your thrifted finds! Using just a few supplies, you can make any piece unique to your personal taste. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Clothing items
  • Thread in various colors
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Beads (optional)

First, head to your local Goodwill thrift store to pick out some solid-colored clothing pieces to embellish, like sweatshirts, jeans and tees. Any color will do; there’s lots to choose from! Pick some thread in whatever colors you lie and gather the rest of your supplies.

Step 1: Remove the Goodwill price tags from the clothing.

Step 2: Use your embroidery hoop to plan where and what you’d like to embroider.

Step 3: Thread your needle with your first color of thread.

Step 4: Begin to embroider a pattern. You can do stripes, dots, stars or whatever else you’d like.

Step 5: Add some beads, if you’d like.

Step 6: Tie off the back of the thread to make sure your masterpiece stays intact.

Step 7: Repeat with as many colors as you’d like or on other articles of clothing.

After you’re finished embroidering, enjoy wearing your new custom clothing pieces!
