Shop second hand for America Recycles Day

Have you hugged a tree lately?

While we don’t literally mean that, a Keep America Beautiful initiative is hoping you figuratively will by doing what you can to pledge your commitment to recycling.

We can think of one fun way to support America Recycles Day on Nov. 15. Buy second hand clothes!

Thrift shopping is an eco-friendly alternative to fast fashion, which is the process of getting new and trendy items to consumers as quickly and cheaply as possible. Fast fashion is wasteful, harmful to the environment and typically doesn’t provide good labor conditions. Plus, the consumer gets the short end of the stick when it comes to quality. Buying second hand clothes is a win-win and keeps items from the landfill.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the most effective way to reduce and reuse, the EPA’s first suggestion is to buy used. “You can find everything from clothes to building materials at specialized reuse centers and consignment shops. Often, used items are less expensive and just as good as new.”

We couldn’t agree more!

As we embrace the comfy, cozy season that is here to stay, we have three thrift finds we found while second hand shopping. Not only will these boost our wardrobes and our moods, but they also make us feel good about doing our part for America Recycles Day and the environment.

This new-with-tags olive green padded vest will remind you of how you are being green AND saving green when you buy second hand clothes. Pair with a rust or gray shirt or crew sweater and some navy ankle pants or skinnies and you’ll be oozing style and feeling oh so good.

When you’re hanging out at home or running errands around town and just want to wear your leggings and a hoodie, this pullover sweatshirt from Mountain in a beautiful dusty rose will make you smile. It’s relaxing just to look at!

This part cardigan part poncho from Bobeau is gorgeous in ivory and so practical to toss over a long-sleeve tee or lightweight sweater. Plus, it’s new with tags! There’s nothing better than second hand shopping to help the environment and finding something that’s never been worn. Score!
