Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program through Goodwill NCW provides free, quality tax preparation from IRS-certified preparers to individuals and families earning up to $66,000 annually.

Our VITA program helps taxpayers access all tax credits for which they are eligible – including the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Wisconsin Homestead Credit. The program assists taxpayers in accessing these valuable refundable credits as well as saves taxpayers tax preparation fees.

Since 2011, the VITA program has provided over 17,000 persons with one-on-one free tax preparation service.  In 2021, the program served over 1580 individuals/families with 40 dedicated volunteers who provided over 4,200 hours of volunteer service and 2.5 million in federal/state refunds to those in need in our communities.

Expanded Tax Credits for 2021 Tax Year

Several tax credits were expanded for tax year 2021 and are fully refundable for qualifying taxpayers. Taxpayers who were previously ineligible, and those who do not have a filing requirement, may not realize they need to file a tax return to claim these credits.

Earned Income Credit:

Working taxpayers ages 19 and above may now qualify for this credit. The maximum credit was nearly tripled to $1,502 for childless workers and income limits were increased for everyone.

Child Tax Credit:

Taxpayers with qualifying children ages 17 and under may now qualify for up to $3,600 (age under 6) or $3,000 (age 6-17) in credit per child. Taxpayer no longer needs earned income to receive the full credit.

Child Care Credit:

Many working taxpayers may claim more childcare expenses ($8,000 one child; $16,000 two or more children) to receive a higher now refundable credit ($4,000 on child; $8,000 two or more children).
